FAQs
"We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when
we created them." -Albert Einstein
* How do I know if Deana's work is right for me?
One way to help determine if my work will help you is to take advantage of the free 20-minute phone consultation. We can discuss what you are looking for and if I can help you. Another way is to look through this site, read some of the pages and see if anything resonates or jumps out at you. Trust your intuition. If you feel drawn to working with me, then you'll know it.
* I've had this pain and these traumatic symptoms for years. I've tried other techniques and nothing has helped. Why should I try something else?
You don't have to. There's no law that says you need to try anything else. But if you're frustrated and you would like to get well, then why not try something else? Keep trying until something works. Also, if you are going to try something new, give it a fair chance. One session may help, or it may not. It may even stir up more pain that's been under the surface. The important thing is to be open to healing, and trust your intuition to guide you.
* Which modality should I request? Which one is the best?
All of the techniques I use are effective, for different reasons, and for different purposes. However, in most sessions I incorporate more than one modality because this seems to be most effective for most people. Massage and energy healing are meant to work together. Often, where we store pain, we also store stress. The energy techniques help to relieve the stress and congestion in an area, which allows the massage to work deeper and more effectively. When dealing with physical trauma for example, we're not often dealing with just an injury or a surgery, but also the emotional and mental effects of the injury or surgery.
Energy healing helps to work on mental, emotional, spiritual and physical levels, often simultaneously which helps the healing process to work more thoroughly and quickly. So if it seems like I'm pushing energy healing over massage, I am, and I'm not. I always combine techniques. I ask clients not to get too focused on the techniques themselves. They're just tools. Also, it is up to you. You are in charge of the session. If you really want to experience just one thing, like Integrated Energy Therapy®, we can do just that. And really you're doing the healing. Also, Reconnective Healing® and The Reconnection® are always done on their own because of the uniqueness of these systems.
* How does Deana's work compare to other massage therapists?
What is different about me and my work I believe is in a few areas. One is the fact that I have a history of directly understanding pain, holistic pain management, and an integrated approach to health from my own recovery from a near-fatal car accident and multiple catastrophic injuries (my doctor's words) and what it takes to heal quickly and deeply. I also understand that healing may involve working with more than one practitioner using more than one modality, and sometimes integrating conventional and alternative therapies. I'm not hung up on or married to a specific treatment or modality for everyone, I believe every person is unique and requires a unique treatment plan.
Also, my work is focused on helping people who have experienced trauma. I have worked with hundreds of people who have been in car accidents, suffered injuries, gone through surgeries, experienced life-threatening illnesses, lost loved ones, and had abuse histories. This is where my heart is and where I do my best work because I understand the complexity and the intricacy of what is involved in healing from trauma. I also have a strong network of other health care professionals who work with trauma so that we can help people deal with all levels of their recovery.
Another aspect of the work that I do that is somewhat different is that I also incorporate energy healing into massage sessions. Many therapists are trained in one or more types of energy healing, especially Reiki. I have studied several systems of energy work to the highest training level available. I love these techniques because they are so gentle and so effective. And, I can teach some of them so that they can be used at home. This helps to empower clients and allows them to see how powerful they are as their own healers and practitioners.
I am also dedicated to learning and improving my skills. I have just finished a graduate program in Experiential Health and Healing through the Graduate Institute. This program reinforced to me the many ways that we can heal by incorporating more natural approaches into our daily lives, and that healing miracles are possible.
* Can Deana heal me?
No, no and no. The ONLY person who can heal you, is you. That's right, you. You are the only person who can have a direct impact on your health and wellbeing. Not me, not your doctor, not your friend or your spouse. Others can help facilitate your recovery, and in sometimes necessary and life-saving ways. We definitely need other people in many ways, but ultimately each one of us in charge of our health. And if we don't believe we can get well or feel better, it's not going to happen.
* I've been feeling better since I started working with Deana. Should I stop taking my medication or going for conventional treatment?
Only you and your physician can make that decision together. If you have been on medication, continue taking it until you and your doctor can determine through proper testing and protocols if any changes should be made.
* How often do I need to see Deana?
That's really up to you. If you are looking to make significant progress, then more often is better, especially in the beginning. Coming once a week is a great idea in the beginning. Once you see progress, you may want to scale back and spread sessions out, and also incorporate more self-health techniques at home.
* How do I know if the treatments are working?
This is tricky. Sometimes you may feel some pain relief, or a greater sense of calmness. Other times, more pain will come to the surface and you may feel temporarily worse. Not fun, I know. After three sessions if you don't see any change at all, and you've incorporated the self-help strategies recommended then you may want to try another course of treatment. Deana has a great deal of knowledge of many types of conventional and alternative therapies and can often guide you in the right direction. You may also need/want to incorporate other modalities in addition to the work with Deana to truly address all of your needs.
* Does energy healing only work on physical problems? Will it work on mental and emotional problems as well?
Yes, it can. Energy healing is actually guided by you. So on whatever level you need healing, it works there. You can also discuss what aspects of your health and your life you would like to change, and this can be the focus of your session.
* Do I have to believe in energy or spiritual beings for these techniques to work for me?
No, you don't. However, the most important aspect of receiving a new type of therapy, especially some of these energy healing techniques that may seem off the wall if you haven't heard of them before, is remaining open. Just keep an open mind and trust that you will receive the best healing for you at that time. This will make a world of difference no matter what form of treatment you are pursuing. Also remember that you are in charge, and if something doesn't feel right or sound right to you, speak up.
* Deana incorporates self-help techniques and exercises she requests that I do on my own. Do I have to do them?
No, you don't. You are in charge of your health and recovery. But wouldn't you want to give yourself the best possible chance for feeling better? Maybe just try one exercise or visualization and see how that works for you.
* I know I'm supposed to be quiet during a session. What if something feels uncomfortable?
You are required to say something and speak up during a session if you are experiencing anything that feels uncomfortable. Also, if for example, you would like more time spent on your legs, or a shoulder, or less pressure, more pressure, etc. then you need to say something. It is your responsibility to communicate before, during and after your session to address anything that concerns you.
* I don't live close enough to come to Deana's office. Can I do a session over the phone?
Yes. EFT sessions can be done over the phone very easily, as can energy healing sessions. Call or e-mail Deana for more information.
